Tellington TTouch® in elderly dogs - How TTouch® can help senior dogs
What is the Tellington Touch® method?
It is a gentle and non-invasive method applicable to both animals and people, to help them develop or regain a state of well-being and balance, acting on the levels: physical, emotional, mental, energetic and spiritual that are interconnected with each other.
This method has three main groups of tools:
The work on the ground that promises to be a field of sensory, proprioceptive and vestibular experience, through the use of objects and paths marked by an unusual experience of sensorimotor skills. Promotes more functional movement and mental balance.
The physical manipulation that occurs within the fascia and connective tissue through the movement of the skin. It looks like a massage but it's not a massage.
Bandages: through the use of specific elastic bandages, an increased experience and self-perception of one's body is supported so as to help the reorganization of posture in a functional and effective way.
In older dogs, physical manipulation and the use of bandages are generally preferred, but very gentle and light work on the ground is also possible and beneficial.
In detail…
The touches, as mentioned above, are not massages but messages that are sent to the cells; subsequently the information detected by the tactile and proprioceptive system is sent through the nerves to the spinal cord and to that part of the brain known as the somatosensory cortex.
Once the sensory information is processed, the brain sends signals back to the muscles to re-organize body posture and movement.
Touches stimulate the production of hormones (endorphins, oxytocin… etc). They affect both the physical side, in the state of pleasure, and the emotional side, as each hormone is connected to one or more specific emotions. The touches are divided into: circular, linear and lifting.
Each touch has a name taken from the animal kingdom, and each touch can be performed with variable rhythm, tempo and pressure.

- Quarter bandage
- Remote taps above the wound, therefore not touching the physical body.
- Work on the ears
- Lying Leopard on the head
- Lying and clouded Leopard down the neck
- Pythons on the neck
Deliveries to the owner:
Touches of the raccoon for healing of the wound
A quarter and a half wrap to calm Martin down
Ear work

At the end of the session Martin breathes more calmly, he is lying down and does not constantly try to change position.

With Stella, one of my dogs at the time, I often used the whole bandage during walks and every evening I made her legs and tail make circular movements, always remaining well within the limits of movement possibilities, indeed not even reaching them as going to the limit of possibilities sends the body the information of limitation (not being able to do something) of movement and not of possibilities (being able to do).
Astro and its gentle accompaniment
Astro was the dog who had one of the lightest, sweetest and most beautiful passings I have ever witnessed.
With him I often followed this routine (with some variations)
-Conscious connection (mindful connection), "simply" placing your hand on his body, without moving it.
-Noah's march
-Shells and leopards on the neck
In order for the treatment path to work at its best, it is important to observe every little signal that our animals give us, and to remember that whatever we do to help them, we do not do it ON them, but TOGETHER with them. TTouch® improves the quality of life of our pets whether they are dogs, cats, horses or other animals. A supported life is a happier, fuller, sweeter life.
